Vic Firth

Founded in 1963 and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, and is today the world's largest manufacturer of first quality drumsticks and mallets.

The company began when Mr. Firth, who had been performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for 12 years, was asked to perform pieces which he felt required a higher-quality drumstick than those that were currently being manufactured. So, Vic decided to design a set of his own sticks.

Vic hand-whittled the first sticks himself from bulkier sticks and sent these prototypes to a wood turner in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The two prototypes that he sent would become the SD1 and SD2, the first two models of sticks manufactured by Vic Firth, Inc.

Vic said, "It came out of necessity, not of imagination or my ability to start a company." Although the sticks were initially intended for Vic's personal use, they gained popularity among his students and were eventually carried by retailers.

The American Classic® line combines tradition and Vic Firth style. With bold designs, the Classics are turned from select hickory — a dense wood with little flex for a more pronounced sound. Hickory is also capable of withstanding a great deal of shock, making it highly durable. The tips are deeply back-cut for intensified cymbal response.
In the early 1980's, Vic and Steve Gadd began working together on a top-secret new project: a signature drumstick. A true design collaboration between two legendary world-class artists had never been done before in the drumstick industry. To this day, each signature stick we make is conceived with the same care and respect for artistry and musicality. Vic's Signature Series truly puts the artist's personal touch into your hands!
Developed for the player who is looking for ultimate rebound on the drums and cymbals, the American Jazz® line is comprised of six models which feature a long taper in the shaft for that great feel! The neck specifications are sizable enough to create dark cymbal sounds, and the small tear drop tip keeps everything in focus.
The American Sound® series features our most popular American Classic® models, but with a full, round tip. The surface area of the round tip brings increased focus and clarity to the drums and cymbals. This line furthers our effort to offer drummers the ability to change their sound and color without sacrificing feel or balance.
The American Custom line consists of a variety of models conceived and engineered by Vic Firth—performer and educator. The first manufacturer to apply the concept of a round striking surface to drumstick design, Vic developed the other originals that complete the line with jazz players in mind. All eleven models are turned from select rock maple for a light, fast-playing stick with great flex and rebound. The Custom line is perfect for the artist who is playing lighter types of music or prefers a beefier stick without a lot of weight.
Freestyle is a new series of sticks from Vic Firth that draws inspiration from the dynamic world of freestyle longboard skateboards. For freestyle riders, it’s about expression, flow, and style. They have the versatility to move up and down the board without losing control, using every inch of their deck. Vic’s Freestyle series of drumsticks combine a massive overall length of 17” with extra long tapers. This combination of length and taper length more than doubles the area where a drummer can place their fulcrum – offering a humongous array of responses and feels out of the same pair of sticks.
Some secrets are too good to keep quiet. Over the years and in collaboration with some of the world’s top artists, the design team at Vic has produced thousands of prototypes ranging from the highly experimental to the straight-ahead. This has been our secret playground. The MJC series have been staples in our back room for years – and while the name says ‘Modern Jazz’, we’ve found they are exceptional in almost any musical setting.
Vic Firth offers a selection of world music percussion products under the World Classic® banner. This line combines Vic Firth’s attention to quality with the expertise of legendary artists worldwide!
American Heritage® drumsticks feature the dimensional specifications of our most popular American Classic® models, but are crafted in maple rather than hickory for greater rebound and flex. This series allows drummers to have the feel of their favorite American Classic model but with a lighter and more "airy" sound, especially on cymbals. This approach is another extension of our effort to offer drummers the ability to change their sound and color without changing feel and balance.
The Vic Firth Nova Drumsticks are made from second grade Hickory, and are perfect for a drummers on a budget. Each pair are weight-sorted and tone-paired by using the Vic Firth technology.
